Obituary for Brother John Walek


John Walek, Jr.

October 09, 1927 - November 20, 2016

Parsippany: John Walek Jr. 89 years old, A 61 Year resident of Parsippany NJ passed peacefully on Sunday, November 20, 2016 at 4:30 am at Compassionate Care Hospice/Dover General..

Born in Newark NJ on October 9th 1927 to John and Margaret Walek Nee Buzzinger. A football player in high school, John graduated from Irvington High School in January 1946. He was wed to Dorothy Gannon of Newark NJ on September 26th 1953 at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Newark, NJ.

“Big John” seemed to be known by all and served his country and community in many capacities. He served in US Army in 1946-47 and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant. John worked at Warner Lambert for 28 years as Supervisor of Building and Grounds, retiring in 1985. He was a life member of Parsippany’s District 1 Mt Tabor Fire Department. He was a member of Sokol Lodge 32 in Boonton, NJ and past National President of the Sokol USA. He organized and ran the Warner Lambert Senior Partners Retirement group. He was a Master Mason of St John’s Lodge #1. John was a long time member and contributor of the Glacier Hills Association. John was an avid Giants fan and former season ticket holder.

John is survived by the love of his life, Dorothy nee Gannon, loving children, Alice Morgan and husband Wendall, John III and his partner Dena Chriss, Thomas and his wife Janet, and Paul and his wife Alison. Known as “Tato” to his 7 Grandchildren, Rachel and her husband Ben, Kate, Michael, Paul, Ali, Benjamin, and Rosie and one great grandchild Benjamin.

A visitation will be held 4-8pm on Tuesday, November 22nd at the Bermingham Funeral Home, 216 South Main Street, Wharton NJ. A funeral service will held, Wednesday at 10:00 AM at the Bermingham Funeral Home. Interment will be private.

The family would like to thank Dodi and Eric Skovronek and all extended family members for all of their compassion and love. He will be greatly missed by all whose lives have been touched by him.

In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516 would be appreciated.

Boonton Sokol is a fraternal organization whose main focus is physical fitness. We offer classes in gymnastics for various age groups. Boonton Sokol is a not-for-profit volunteer group who shares their love of  gymnastics in a fun, educational, and safe way. We truly are a family organization.
